Meet George

Title: Associate
Business Area: European Equities
Location: London
Joined Credit Suisse: April 2012

I graduated from the University of Cambridge, with a Master’s degree in Management. I especially enjoy business and investment strategy. So as I was thinking about possible careers - finance seemed like a natural fit. I started at Credit Suisse as a summer intern and then joined as an Analyst after a year of traveling.

I work on the European Equities Sales Desk. My job is to help my clients, a mixture of more traditional asset managers and hedge funds, with their equity investments. I’m always looking for stock ideas, which is my favorite part of the job. Working in sales also means that I end up connecting with a lot of people across the company, from research to trading functions, in order to filter my clients the best information.

The best part of my work – when a client benefits from my advice. Given that I work in Equity Sales, I spend a lot of time looking at and analyzing stocks. So when a stock that I recommend does well, or when a client acts off my advice, that’s the best part.

At Credit Suisse, you can make a big impact early on in your career. You get a lot of responsibility right away. Nobody asks where I am. If I want to spend the day working on an idea, or out of the office seeing clients or companies, that’s fine — people respect what I’m doing — I just have to show results. The culture is also really supportive. We work together and share ideas, and everyone wants their colleagues to succeed. I had heard about this aspect of the culture before I joined the company and it’s proven to be true.

We start the day early. I’m at the desk by 6:30 a.m. We have a morning sales meeting at 6:55 a.m., where we listen to the research analysts discuss their recommendations for the day. The morning gets much busier after that point. We connect with clients via phone, email and IM chat to discuss ideas and answer their questions. The work in the afternoon varies. I have about 20 clients, I tend to be out of the office every day, meeting some of them in person to discuss ideas. We also might have meetings with management teams and the calendar fills up pretty quickly. Any free time I have I’ll be working on ideas and reading research. I also go to the gym every day at 5 p.m., and if I need to then I come back to the office afterwards.

At the weekend I like to watch and play football. We also try and organize matches between sales and research. I go to the gym a few times a week. I also meet for drinks with my friends as much as possible.
