Yingjie Sun is a long-distance runner who competes in events ranging from 5000 meters to the marathon. Her best marathon record was 2 hours 19 minutes and 38 seconds. She is the record holder of China’s women’s half marathon and marathon, and an icon in the athletics world in China. Her achievement in the marathon is remarkable and she has consistently attained excellent results throughout her career.
Ms. Sun rose to prominence by winning two gold medals at the 2002 Asian Games with performances that ranked her 2nd and 4th in the world at the time. In 2003, Ms. Sun and Liu Xiang, the Olympic Gold Medalist for the men’s 110-meter hurdles, won China’s only two medals at the World Championships in Athletics. She also won the World Half Marathon Championships in 2004, and is a three-time winner of the Beijing marathon, where the record she created was the 3rd best in the history of women’s marathon.
