A new energy paradigm?

Despite the significant technological progress and enhanced market penetration of new alternatives to carbon-based fuels, the most widely utilized energy sources remain oil, natural gas and coal. All signs point to 2018 becoming the strongest year for the oil and natural gas industry since 2013. Nevertheless, solar, wind and other renewable power development is also on an impressive growth path. Given the continued dominance of carbon-based fuels, what major factors and under what time frame will renewables and other alternative fuels become more or less relevant on the global stage?
