Are we transitioning to a commodities-based new monetary order?

Original language: English

The current global monetary order – based largely on US treasury securities held as collateral in reserve portfolios – is fraying as a result of deglobalization, commodity shortages, supply chain disruption and the return of high inflation after a quarter-century hiatus.

What will the monetary world order look like when the current macroeconomic and geopolitical turmoil settles? Will commodities underpin concepts of value once more, as was the case until the end of the gold standard in 1971? Credit Suisse’s Zoltan Pozsar looks ahead to a “Bretton Woods 3.0” global monetary system, based on a basket of commodities and central bank digital currencies of countries rich in commodities and industrial capacity. Could this transition already be underway? What will it mean for inflation and interest rates? And is the dollar’s peak behind us, while the renminbi’s rise lies ahead?

Speaker(s):

  • Zoltan Pozsar, Global Head of Short-Term Interest Rate Strategy, Credit Suisse
