What does the state of US-China relations mean for Asia?

Original language: English

China’s inexorable growth is reshaping its place in the world economy – and changing the face of its international relationships. Growing tensions between China and the U.S. are increasing the risks for businesses and investors. How will the world’s two superpowers find a way to compete peacefully and co-operate on matters of global importance, such as climate change? And what does this state of U.S.-China relations mean for other countries in Asia, many of which have security partnerships with the U.S. but count China as their biggest trading partner?

As a former Singaporean diplomat and President of the United Nations Security Council, Kishore Mahbubani has a privileged perspective on how great power rivalries can impact the world. How does China’s growing economic integration with the rest of the world limit the US’s ability to restrict China’s growth? What is the outlook for China’s relations with its Asian neighbors? And how does the Russia-Ukraine conflict change the picture in Asia? Join us for an expert analysis of these important topics and more.

Speaker(s):

  • Kishore Mahbubani, Distinguished Fellow, Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore
  • Host: Lito Camacho, Vice Chairman, Asia Pacific, Credit Suisse

What's next in China's long-running healthcare reforms?

Original language: Chinese

China’s National Healthcare Security Administration (NHSA) has conducted a number of reforms since 2018, lowering key medication price with a market economy mechanism, while earlier the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) accelerated the approvals process for new drugs. These policies have been widely praised by consumers and have important read-through to manufacturers, but many challenges remain: such as geographically unevenly distributed healthcare and the conflict between ever growing healthcare demand and preventing healthcare expenditure to balloon.

Hear from a leading academic on how China is balancing its goal of universal access to healthcare with the benefits of an efficient, free market for innovative healthcare product manufacturing and development.  Faced with momentous decisions, how will policymakers decide their priorities in future healthcare reform? And what levels of expenditure can healthcare providers, insurers, suppliers and patients expect?

Speaker(s):

  • Bin Jiang, Associate Professor, Department of Pharmacy Administration and Clinical Pharmacy, Peking University
  • Host: Yang Huang, Head of China Healthcare Securities Research, Credit Suisse

How can we deal with the new challenges along the path of energy transition?

Original language: Chinese

Disruptions to global energy supplies have underlined both the urgency of the move away from fossil fuels and the risks of the energy transition. Investment and innovation in renewable energy continues to accelerate, but geopolitical tensions, surging energy prices and supply chain dislocations all add to the challenges ahead. Can China reach its ambitious decarbonization goals without disrupting economic growth?

Join this panel to hear from a renowned expert on the outlook for China’s energy policy. Will the complex global backdrop accelerate China’s energy transition, or slow it down? Which innovative technologies will enjoy policy support? How will China balance the need for both new and traditional energy systems? With the target of peak carbon emissions approaching in 2030, the coming year will be critical in dictating the pace and direction of China’s energy transition.

Speaker(s):

  • Boqiang Lin, Dean, China Institute for Studies in Energy Policy, Xiamen University
  • Host: Alex Liu, Head of Securities Research, Credit Suisse Securities (China)

How can global investors participate in China's sustainable transition and development?

Original language: English

China's ambitious decarbonization target is creating opportunities for sustainable investment on an unprecedented scale. Yet concerns over the transparency and consistency of sustainable finance standards – both globally and within China - remain a hurdle for investors. How can investors be sure their resources will have a positive impact as intended?

Join this session for insights from a global sustainable investing specialist and an expert on green finance in China. What are the opportunities in China's net zero transition? What kind of regulations will shape sustainable investing? How can investors integrate sustainability in their China portfolio? This session will explore the role of sustainable finance in supporting China’s “dual carbon” goals of peak carbon emissions by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2060.

Speaker(s):

  • Jeroen Bos, Global Head of Sustainable Investing, Credit Suisse Asset Management
  • Tianyin Sun, Deputy Director, Center for Green Finance Research, Tsinghua University
  • Moderator: Erica Poon Werkun, Head of Securities Research, Asia Pacific, Credit Suisse

How can investors capitalize on China's changing equity ownership structure?

Original language: English

The ownership structure of Chinese equities – both onshore and offshore – is in flux. The shift is driven by several forces including changes in listing dynamics, the rise of the domestic institutional investor, shifts in benchmarking and the fallout from increased Sino-US tensions. As that shift evolves, significant opportunities will emerge for investors able to anticipate how it will shape up.

Join us to hear from the head of our Asia Pacific Quantitative and Systematic Strategy (QSS) team as he shares insights to help answer the key questions: Where are international and domestic investors currently positioned? How will things develop from here? And how can investors generate alpha from understanding ownership, flow and positioning?

Speaker(s):

  • Will Stephens, Head of Quantitative and Systematic Strategy (QSS), Asia Pacific, Credit Suisse

How is hardware making the Metaverse a reality?

Original language: Chinese

Augmented Reality (AR) is emerging as one of the most exciting components of the metaverse – billed by Mark Zuckerberg as “the next chapter of the internet”. By combining elements of the real world and online connectivity, AR offers a range of applications from more realistic gaming to immersive shopping experiences. Sophisticated hardware, including smart glasses, will be key to future interactions with the metaverse and unlocking the full potential of AR. Hong Kong’s MAD Gaze burst onto the scene in 2017 with a range of stylish new designs and by 2017 had captured 21% of the market for AR headsets, earning a top-3 slot in this emerging industry in 2021. Hardware developments over the next few years will be critical for how this technological dream will develop: what are the opportunities? And which key applications will prove to be essential? Join us for an opportunity to gaze into the future and hear from a prime mover in this exciting new space.

Speaker(s):

  • Jordan Cheng, Founder and CEO, MAD Gaze
  • Host: Kyna Wong, Head of China Technology and Telecoms Securities Research, Credit Suisse
