Our People Meet Jeslyn
Title: Assistant Vice President
Business Area: Compliance
Joined Credit Suisse in 2011
I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Science from the National University of Singapore. I was interested in banking because it’s essential to everyone – it’s a crucial part of every economy. And I liked the idea of working in compliance. It’s interesting to me to learn about ways to protect the assets and reputation of the company.
I joined Credit Suisse as part of its first Compliance Academy Trainee Program, right after I finished school. Credit Suisse was one of the first companies in the industry to introduce a trainee program within compliance, and I thought that was very insightful in the current regulatory environment. I was part of the initial batch of trainees.
I’m part of the Financial Crime Compliance team. My team specializes in customer due diligence at the account opening and modification stages. We handle private banking account opening requests for all types of clients, from ultra-high-net-worth individuals to corporations. Our job is to make sure that the bank and its clients remain in compliance with regulations, and that the bank is onboarding bona fide clients.
I enjoy providing advice and recommendations to ensure that the company manages risk and makes informed decisions. I feel good when we can offer solid guidance to the Front Office. I also like working with my colleagues to ensure that our clients have positive experiences. It’s satisfying when we know that we’re providing great service to great clients, and that we are helping them be successful. This is how we set ourselves apart from our competitors.
I had an international assignment in Sydney when I was providing coverage for the Australia Financial Crime Compliance team. I ended up living and working there on and off for a total of three months in 2015. My responsibilities expanded from my usual portfolio back in Singapore, and it gave me the chance to do things I wouldn’t normally do. For example, during that time I served as the Financial Crime Compliance contact for one of the regulators, who had just completed a review of our program. It was a really exciting time as I learned to manage rigorous demands for my attention.
My days are a bit of a whirlwind. I tend to come in early to enjoy the peace and quiet and sort out what I’m going to do before everything gets going. We receive high volumes of requests internally from the Front Office and we need to respond to them in order of urgency and importance. Simultaneously, we are often also involved in audits, investigations and requests from regulators. My team serves as a gatekeeper for multiple compliance matters, which means we get to work with colleagues from all over the private banking space.
I like to travel and explore new places. I’m always planning my next trip so that I have something to look forward to. My favorite places are London and Tokyo—any place that’s cosmopolitan. These places offer the best mix of great restaurants and good food.
