The Breakthrough Years, 1911–1919
September 16, 2017 – January 21, 2018
Curator: Dr. Josef Helfenstein
An impressive Marc Chagall exhibition will be on display at the Kunstmuseum Basel from September 16, 2017 – January 21, 2018. The exhibition curated by Dr. Josef Helfenstein – "Chagall. The Breakthrough Years, 1911–1919" – explores Chagall's early work and includes impressions from his metropolitan Paris life alongside elements from his years in provincial Russia. The occurrence of World War I meant the beginning of turbulent times for Chagall in biographical, political, and artistic terms. In the period in and after 1914 he created many works and paintings that are the result of his in-depth self-reflection.
This exhibition is exciting indeed, and Kunstmuseum Basel uses the custom rooms of the new building that was opened in the spring of 2016 to present Chagall's stunning masterpieces. The "host" is Josef Helfenstein, who took office as director of the museum precisely one year ago (September 1, 2016) and wants to make his museum accessible to everyone as a place of cultural exchange. To further promote this idea and include the broadest possible spectrum of Basel's population in this wonderful exhibition, Credit Suisse has created another special campaign as partner to the museum and sponsor of the exhibition "Chagall. The Breakthrough Years, 1911–1919." As Oliver Zwemmer, Head of Region Northern Switzerland for Credit Suisse, announced at the press conference for the opening of the exhibition, Credit Suisse is giving away some 2,000 tickets to the exhibition at its branches around Basel. So hurry and get your free tickets to the Chagall exhibition!
