Title: Managing Director
Business Area: Investment Banking
Location: Hong Kong SAR (China)
Joined Credit Suisse: June 2009
Coming from a family of engineers, I thought I would take the same path. I completed my Bachelor’s and my Master’s in Civil Engineering at the University of Cambridge, but after a couple of internships in engineering, I decided to give investment banking a try. That’s where I’ve been ever since. What appealed to me was that very junior people could take real responsibility. I like the dynamic environment and the way people work hard together to achieve something.
I joined Credit Suisse in 2009 and am fortunate to be in a team that revamped the Equity Derivatives business in Asia Pacific. It’s been extremely rewarding to see the things we’ve collectively accomplished as a team over the last seven years and how the business has grown. Credit Suisse provides an exceptional platform that brings together passionate people and gives them the tools they need to accomplish great things.
I now head up the Equity Derivatives Sales team for Hong Kong and Singapore. My team helps financial institutions and family offices use derivatives to realize their investment objectives. I like Derivatives because it allows investors to express their investment views in any kind of market situation. My team acts as a bridge between our clients and various internal Credit Suisse teams such as trading, structuring, legal, IT and operations.
I always tell my team that client relationships have to come before the result. I like doing trades and seeing our team do well, but what really motivates me is to build trusting relationships with clients. To be successful, you need to listen to what people are saying, understand them and build trust. I also get a lot of satisfaction out of seeing people on my team develop in their own careers. It’s incredibly rewarding to witness their growth.
Every day is different, but in general I have three areas of focus. One is working with clients to identify suitable instruments that match their goals, and their risk/reward profiles. Another focus is working with the internal teams to make the trades happen. Finally, I spend time helping the people on my team develop their own areas of expertise and relationships. Everyone on my team has a slightly different role, but I want all of them to have the freedom to form their own views, come up with ideas and take ownership of what they do.
I enjoy going out to eat and spending time with people, whether it’s for work or purely social. I like to hear people’s life stories and make connections. I’m also an avid reader. Travel is also a big part of my life. The more exotic the place, the better.
