Credit Suisse launches UK's first DevOps Engineering Apprenticeship alongside Corndel

A cutting-edge and practical course designed and delivered by DevOps experts.

London, July 14, 2020 – Credit Suisse has launched the DevOps Engineering Diploma with a cohort of learners from its Global Markets division. Working with Corndel, they created a new 18-month programme accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. It is fully funded through the UK Apprenticeship Levy. The DevOps Engineering Diploma is aimed at upskilling existing technology professionals in the latest continuous delivery practices and cloud-based tooling. It is already proving very popular with organisations looking to accelerate their digital transformation.

Over 18 months, participants will benefit from fortnightly 1-to-1 personal coaching and a curriculum designed by DevOps practitioners. The programme will develop learners to become skilled in:

  • Writing basic application logic and scripts in Python
  • Building a continuous integration pipeline
  • Performing routine security audits and patching vulnerabilities
  • Setting up secure servers on the cloud
  • Extending your build pipeline to include continuous deployment both on- and off-cloud
  • Setting up monitoring tools and debugging issues through recorded logs
  • Improving time-to-productive using containers
  • Configuring servers using infrastructure as code.

Steve Pegg, UK Regional Head of Global Markets Technology at Credit Suisse commented: "We're very pleased to launch this pioneering programme to develop and improve DevOps excellence across our team. Central to our workforce strategy, we are committed to developing our staff, attracting talent into Global Markets Technology and fostering our core engineering culture."

Aaron Knauf, DevOps Lead for Equities Risk at Credit Suisse and participant of the programme said: "Ensuring our engineering community is equipped with the right skills is the key to getting the most from our ongoing investment in cloud technology. As part of the apprenticeship, candidates are expected to apply the skills they learn in their day-to-day work."

"The DevOps Engineering Diploma is both detailed and relevant, and it has given me a fresh perspective on how to approach delivery in a more holistic way" said Chris Cairns, QIS Trading Solutions Tech Lead at Credit Suisse. Roman Korol, Release and Environment Management Lead at Credit Suisse added: "The DevOps Engineering Diploma has given me exposure to a wide variety of tools, practices and skills needed to work on automation & elimination of manual tasks."

"91 per cent of businesses with over 1,000 employees have either implemented DevOps or plan to do so in the near future. As adoption continues to soar, competition for the best talent makes it increasingly difficult to access the skills needed to resource DevOps teams. Mirroring trends across the industry, recruiting DevOps Engineers is becoming harder and more expensive," says Chris Perry, Digital Account Director at Corndel. "This means new and sustainable talent solutions such as the Credit Suisse programme are critical."

The Corndel DevOps Engineering Diploma is aligned to the DevOps Engineer Level 4 Apprenticeship Standard. It is crafted into a bespoke programme taught in the context of each organisation’s operating environment, focusing on the most relevant tools and concepts for the organisation.
