Asian Investment Conference 2023

Magnus Renfrew

Co-Chairman and Global Director, The Art Assembly

Magnus Renfrew

Magnus Renfrew serves as Co-Chairman & Global Director of The Art Assembly, the leading art fair organizer in Asia Pacific and one of the big three organizers worldwide, with fairs in Shanghai, Sydney, New Delhi, Taipei, Singapore and Tokyo.

Mr. Renfrew previously served as founding fair director for ART HK – Hong Kong International Art Fair before its acquisition by MCH Group (the parent company of Art Basel) in 2011 and led the first two editions of Art Basel in Hong Kong.

In 2019, Mr. Renfrew launched a new contemporary art fair, Taipei Dangdai, held every May. In January 2023, he launched ART SG, a new art fair for Southeast Asia which, with 165 galleries, was the biggest art fair launch in Asia in a decade, and one of the largest art fair launches in history.

The inaugural edition of the Tokyo Gendai art fair will take place in July, welcoming 80 leading international galleries to Japan.

Mr. Renfrew has been widely recognized for his contribution to developing the art scene in Asia. He has been named twice in ArtReview magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the international art world and was honoured as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2013.

His book Uncharted Territory: Culture and Commerce in Hong Kong’s Art World contends Hong Kong has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to assert itself as the creative and cultural hub of Asia, rivaling the likes of New York and London.

Mr. Renfrew has previously served on the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, and as Chair of the Advisory Council for the Para Site art space in Hong Kong. He currently serves as a trustee for Compton Verney, an independent national art gallery in the UK.
