The 15th Zurich Film Festival – yet another resounding success

The festival's anniversary edition provided many a magical moment and turned Zurich into the center of the international movie scene for 11 days.

From September 26 to October 6, 2019, all eyes were on the Zurich Film Festival (ZFF). The anniversary and outstanding program brought movie fever to the city on the River Limmat. This year, the more than 160 movies from 58 different countries attracted a record 117,000 visitors to the city's movie theaters. And adding to the international shine were of course the numerous celebrities that attended the festival, such as charismatic actress Cate Blanchett, this year's recipient of the Golden Icon Award. The Golden Eye in the International Feature Film section was awarded to SOUND OF METAL from Darius Marder.

The festival's success clearly shows that dreams do come true. Of course, in the movie world as in business, it's crucial to have a viable idea, expertise, perseverance, and the right partners. Credit Suisse has supported the Zurich Film Festival since its inauguration 15 years ago and is now one of the main partners of the event. The bank supports the International Feature Film and International Film Music competitions, as well as two gala premieres. In 2011, it became a partner of the Award Night and in 2012 expanded its long-standing commitment by becoming a partner of the Golden Icon Award. In addition, in the Awards & Retrospectives section, the bank also supported the Golden Eye Award, won this year by Kristen Stewart, and the "A Tribute to..." award, which was deservedly presented to Roland Emmerich for his life's work.

Variety meets ZFF

To ensure that this year's anniversary festival was celebrated in style, Credit Suisse partnered with Variety, the leading entertainment business news publication. In the Variety Lounge @ Zurich Film Festival presented by Credit Suisse, celebrities and filmmakers showed themselves to be open and approachable, providing personal insights into their work and their world. The Lounge hosted fascinating celebrity guests, such as Julie Delpy, who was in Zurich to present the European premiere of her movie "My Zoe," as well as Roland Emmerich and Javier Bardem. These interesting interviews were published across all of the international film and entertainment media’s platforms. Credit Suisse also posted selected highlights from the lounge via its own social media channels.

The ZFF "A celebration of cinema. A celebration for everyone."

The founding duo of Nadja Schildknecht and Karl Spoerri intended the Zurich Film Festival to be "A celebration of cinema. A celebration for everyone." This has been possible not least because of the early support from Credit Suisse, which it has expanded over the years. This gave the ZFF the foundation it needed to significantly grow its support base in past years, which went hand in hand with the festival's increasing success. Nadja Schildknecht explains: "Credit Suisse is one of the festival's four main partners and has believed in it from the very beginning. In the meantime, 190 companies, foundations, and the public sector have followed its lead. We are immensely grateful for this because the festival could not exist, let alone continue to grow, without the enthusiasm of these parties." Not only does the ZFF offer a platform for established celebrities, but it also promotes young cinematic talent in any way it can. Credit Suisse also recognizes the importance of fostering young talent and has been committed for many years in a range of areas to encouraging youngsters to make use of their talents and to seize opportunities.

Magical moments

The Golden Eye brings movie fever to Zurich every year and the city's residents are unmistakably big fans of the ZFF. When Hollywood glamor comes to town, it means great cinema and the chance to catch a glimpse of international stars. The green carpet has a magical draw and those with a bit of luck and patience were able to take snapshots of film stars and celebrities, such as Donald Sutherland, Oliver Stone, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Tobias Moretti, and Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton. Unforgettable memories of a great festival that this year was undoubtedly a celebration for everyone!
