Credit Suisse’s Global Financial Strategies Group Releases Framework for Improving the Quality of Decisions
Michael Mauboussin recently rejoined Credit Suisse as a Managing Director and Head of Global Financial Strategies in the Investment Banking division. In his new role, Mr. Mauboussin provides thought leadership and strategy guidance to Credit Suisse clients in the areas of valuation and portfolio positioning, capital markets theory, competitive strategy analysis, and decision making.
The inaugural report “Cultivating Your Judgment Skills” is based on the premise that thoughtful investing requires having some view of the future. Examining a number of studies and frameworks on the topic of good judgment, the report concludes that sound decision-making requires:
• Understanding causality
• Effectively incorporating information from past events to understand present prospects
• Updating probabilities correctly based on the new arrival information
Prior to his current role Mr. Mauboussin served as Chief US Investment Strategist at Credit Suisse from 1999-2004 and has spent the past nine years as Chief Investment Strategist at Legg Mason Capital Management. He has authored several widely-read business books focusing on finance, investing, statistical analysis, sports and performance management. Mr. Mauboussin has been an adjunct professor of finance at Columbia Business School since 1993 and is on the faculty of the Heilbrunn Center for Graham and Dodd Investing. He has also joined the board of the Credit Suisse Research Institute.
