As Vice Chairman, Mr. Burrows will take a senior advisory role, focusing on developing Credit Suisse’s client relationships in Australia and throughout the region. He joins Credit Suisse this week and will be based in Sydney.

Helman Sitohang, co-Head of Investment Banking Department for Asia Pacific, welcomed Mr. Burrows’ appointment at a time of strong momentum for Credit Suisse in Australia and the region. "Mark’s depth of experience both locally and globally will be extremely valuable to our clients as we continue to build on our strong market position in the Asia Pacific region," Mr. Sitohang said.

Rob Stewart and John Knox, co-Heads of Credit Suisse’s Investment Banking Department in Australia, said they are delighted Mr. Burrows is joining Credit Suisse. "Mark has an outstanding reputation as a trusted adviser to major corporate clients around the world. He will be an excellent addition to our team," Mr. Knox said.

Mr. Burrows said: "I'm delighted to be joining Credit Suisse, which is a well capitalized, global bank, in a very strong position following the global financial crisis. Credit Suisse has a great business throughout Australia and Asia Pacific, and has led some of the most significant and complex transactions in Australia’s corporate history."

Mr. Burrows’ career in investment banking spans 40 years, commencing with Baring Brothers in London. From the mid-1980s to 1999, he was Executive Chairman of Baring Brothers Burrows in Sydney, after which he relocated to London as Deputy Chairman and Managing Director of ING Barings. In 2004, he joined Lazard as a managing partner in London, before returning to the role of Chairman in Australia.

Mr. Burrows has been a non-executive chairman, deputy chairman and director of a number of major Australian, British and New Zealand public companies. Mr. Burrows has also heavily influenced the development of Australian public policy over many years. In the 1990s, he led the development of Australia’s national uniform corporate law and financial market regulation, which led to the creation of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission. Most recently, Mr. Burrows has participated as one of two Australian representatives at the G20 Summits in both Toronto and Seoul in 2010.
