Risk Capital for Switzerland

SVC - Ltd. for Risk Capital for SMEs provides Swiss SMEs and start-up businesses with venture capital of up to CHF 100 million.

The company invests for the long term in innovative projects of SMEs and start-up businesses that strengthen Switzerland as a center of employment or create jobs. Up to CHF 100 million is available. The company invests principally in the following three target groups:

  • start-up businesses
  • existing businesses
  • small-scale businesses

Innovative companies in various development phases are supplied with venture capital in the form of additional equity capital or as loans with profit participation.

The invested capital is preserved by making balanced investments, thus generating added value in the long term. Recovered capital from exits and realized gains are reinvested in new projects. This gives long-term support to the Swiss economy in general, and to SMEs and start-up businesses in particular. 

Background

From the "Swiss Worry Barometer 2009" study, commissioned by Credit Suisse, it emerged that what the Swiss population was most worried about, by a wide margin, was unemployment - and that concern over general economic performance was also rising fast. Credit Suisse therefore launched a number of initiatives addressing various problems, among them youth unemployment and the shortage of specialists in the IT sector.

Against this backdrop, Credit Suisse also announced that in collaboration with the Swiss Venture Club it was making venture capital of up to CHF 100 million available to foster SMEs and start-up businesses. SVC - Ltd. for Risk Capital for SMEs was established as a subsidiary to manage this venture capital and channel it to where it is most effective. In this company Credit Suisse is creating an attractive investment platform for Swiss SMEs and start-up businesses, thus supporting Switzerland as a location for business. The primary focus of all the activities of SVC - Ltd. for Risk Capital for SMEs is the objective of preserving existing jobs in the long term or creating new ones.
