Credit Suisse and the Swiss Market
Credit Suisse has been shaped by Switzerland. And the bank, for its part, contributes to the development of the country's economy.
Credit Suisse has helped shape the Swiss financial industry for more than 150 years. The domestic market has been a stable source of revenue for the bank. As a global financial organization, Credit Suisse not only provides important services as a traditional asset manager and as a lender to businesses and individuals, but also offers investment banking services, without which the heavily export-oriented Swiss economy would not be able to function as well as it does. Moreover, the big banks are principally responsible for ensuring the distribution of liquidity in Switzerland (via the interbank market), and they finance a major part of the country's common financial infrastructure (stock exchange etc.).
Map of Switzerland with Branch Offices
Credit Suisse plays an important part in Swiss economy and society. We have branches and offices in almost 200 communities, towns and cities.
The bank contributes in many ways to the continued development of the Swiss economy:
- Credit Suisse is one of the largest taxpayers in Switzerland. Between 2006 and 2010 the company paid an average of CHF 1.2 billion a year in taxes worldwide. We also pay taxes that are unrelated to income, which exceeded CHF 400 million in 2010. In addition, on behalf of employees, Credit Suisse pays payroll withholding taxes and social security contributions, as well as other statutory levies. In 2010, these additional taxes and contributions amounted to over CHF 4 billion globally. Our 50,000 employees also continued to pay billions in income tax worldwide.
- Our clients include some 100,000 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This represents around a third of all Swiss SMEs, important contributors to the country's economy. As raising capital is difficult for many of these companies, we offer alternative options for them to finance their business, and thus help support an important pillar of our economy.
- Besides our corporate clients, we serve about two million private clients in Switzerland.
- Credit Suisse has branch offices in almost 200 municipalities, towns and cities.
