UNEP Statement

The Finance Initiative of the UN Environment Program (UNEP) is a key international sustainability agreement of more than 200 banks, insurers and investment funds.

In the UNEP Statement by Financial Institutions the signatories recognize the interaction between the economy, society and the environment, and commit to sustainable development.

The voluntary commitments include the following:

Sustainable Development

  • We regard sustainable development as a fundamental aspect of sound business management.
  • We recognize sustainable development as a corporate commitment and as an integral part of our pursuit of good corporate citizenship.

Environmental Management

  • We support the precautionary approach to environmental management, which strives to anticipate and prevent potential environmental degradation.
  • We are committed to complying with regional, national, and international environmental regulations applicable to our operations and business services.

Public Awareness and Communication

  • We recommend that financial institutions develop and publish a statement of their environmental policy and periodically report on the steps they have taken to promote integration of environmental considerations into their operations.

Credit Suisse was one of the first signatories of the UNEP Statement in 1992. As well as participating in the UNEP FI Global Roundtable, Credit Suisse contributed to the work of groups of experts on topics such as biodiversity and human rights.
