Commodities
For ideas that lead in the commodities complex
In today's volatile markets, knowledge and understanding of both the financial flows and the physical market fundamentals are vital.
With Credit Suisse, our clients gain unparalleled access to the commodities complex and the key forces driving the markets.
Institutional clients come to Credit Suisse Commodities with a wide range of objectives and needs. They may be looking for exposure to a well established commodity benchmark, an innovative alpha strategy or anything in between. Credit Suisse Commodities has responded by introducing an ever growing family of highly flexible, liquid, transparent, and slippage-free solutions. These innovative commodity index products include the CS Commodity Benchmark (CSIXTR), “enhanced” beta indices, absolute return strategies and a universe of hybrid products.
Through our strategic relationship with Glencore, the world’s largest physical commodity trader, Credit Suisse can provide unique market insight and thought leading investment and hedging solutions. These include our award winning GAINS (CS Glencore Active Index Strategy) family of index products.
The commodities business consists of professionals across Calgary, London, New York/Stamford, Singapore and Zurich.
Complex products, leading solutions
Oil and refined products
We are an active market maker in all standard benchmark products and are particularly strong at providing solutions for specific locations, grades and margins.
Natural gas
We provide clients with a top tier banking and hedging solutions group and are an active physical and financial market maker in most North American locations. This strength has now been extended to the UK gas market.

We have quickly established ourselves as the premier coal house, being awarded Energy Risk magazine's Coal House of the Year in 2009 and 2010. We are acknowledged as the pioneer in lauching the OTC iron ore market and remain the largest market maker. Complementing these businesses, we are also active in the freight market, both wet and dry routes, and emissions; and are one of the few market makers in options for both these markets.
Base metals
We have become a key market maker for LME products, benefiting from both our Glencore relationship and a strong experienced team. Mining clients benefit from our expertise across investment banking, equity coverage and risk management.
Precious metals
We continue to operate a strong physical franchise in Switzerland, being one of the two official Zurich clearers of platinum group metal. Complementing this team, we offer a wide array of pricing and derivative solutions out of our London trading desk.
