Christoph Avenarius, Ph.D.
Christoph Avenarius, Ph.D., is a Director of Alternative Investments within Credit Suisse’s Asset Management division based in Zurich. Since joining Credit Suisse in 2003, he has been responsible for investments into hedge funds focusing on directional strategies, emerging markets and equity related. Through significant involvement with local emerging market hedge funds over the last few years, he played a leading role in establishing the Credit Suisse Fund of Hedge Funds platform’s strong global presence.
Prior to joining Credit Suisse, Christoph was Head of Emerging Markets Trading and Global Credit Markets at ABB Capital, where he co-headed the firm’s internal hedge fund operation in Zurich. Previously, he was Head of Emerging Market Trading and Development at HVB International Markets Division, where he oversaw EM currency and fixed income trading. He started his professional career at the Financial Services and Treasury divisions of BMW in Munich.
Christoph holds a B.A. in Economics and an M.Sc. in Physics from Munich University. From 1985 to 1986 he was Visiting Scholar at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, on a stipend of the German National Merit Foundation. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar in 1992. He is a member of, and regular participant in, the Reinventing Bretton Woods Committee, a consulting body bringing together market practitioners, government officials and members of international organizations.
